Building and Targeting Advertiser Website ("My") Audiences

Updated over 2 weeks ago

‘My Audiences’ refers to the advertiser's own audience, as opposed to marketplace audiences that you can access when creating a new campaign on Realize. They can also refer to custom audiences you created on the platform, such as Predictive, Search, or Mail Audiences. These audiences can then be used for retargeting purposes, meaning you can reach the users within your audience that Taboola can match from within–allowing more qualified users to be targeted via specific or sequential messaging.

Navigate to the Audiences tab in the left side bar in Realize to start creating your audiences.

Website Visitors

These are the Audiences that are automatically created based on your Pixel setup from your conversion events.

1. Go to the ‘Tracking’ tab and follow the steps to set up conversion rules. See Defining and Creating Conversions.

2. Once you’ve set the rules and data is collected, the following audiences will be automatically available in the ‘Audiences’ tab under ‘Pixel Audiences’:

Pixel Audiences
  • An “All Website Visits” audience

    • An audience representing "All Website Visits" for anyone who has visited your site. The Last Modified By column will show "Created by Taboola”.

  • For every conversion rule that you have created in the Tracking tab

    • Audiences based on conversion rules will have a similar name to the conversion with “_Conversion_Rule” at the end (i.e., product page visitors_Conversion_Rule). The Last Modified By column will show “Created by Taboola”.

The audiences will automatically become available for targeting or exclusion when creating or editing campaigns under ‘My Audiences’. For example, you can create a retargeting campaign for all of your site visitors. Or, you might want to exclude converters based on the conversion rules audiences:

You can search for your audience using the search bar, or you can filter by the type of audience to help find which audience you want to target or exclude from your campaigns.

Manually Created by User Based on Taboola Pixel

If you want to create audiences that are not based on the aforementioned rules, you can do it manually.

To get started, do the following:

Go to the ‘Audiences’ tab. Here you can view existing audiences or build new ones.

Audience tab

Click New Audience and choose Pixel to start building a new website audience.

There are two types of website audiences:

Create New Audience Button

Select Audience Type

  • URL-based: Enables you to build a targetable audience of people who visit your website, a section of your website or certain web pages of your website.

  • Event-based: Enables you to build a targetable audience of people who have completed a specific action, such as subscribed to a newsletter or purchased an item.

URL-Based Audiences

Pixel Based Audience

For URL-based audiences, in the URL Conditions section, you can manage conditions that will define the URL match of this audience. For URL-based audiences, do the following:

  1. In the Condition field, select Equals to match the URL/page exactly, or Contains to match part of the URL.

  2. In the URL field, enter the URL or part of the URL of the destination page whose visitors should count as part of this audience (for example, ‘newsletter’). We recommend excluding 'http' or 'https'.

  3. You can click Add Condition to add additional ‘Or’ conditions.

  4. In the Audience Name field, use a unique and descriptive name for your audience (for example, ‘newsletter signup’). Note that this name will appear under the available audiences for targeting in the Campaign Targeting section on the Campaign Setup page.

  5. In the Description field, enter a unique description that will help you remember your audience.

  6. Click Create Audience to create and add your new audience. You can later retarget this audience on the Campaign Setup page.

Event-Based Audiences

Event-based audiences enable you to build a targetable audience who have completed a specific action, such as subscribed to a newsletter or purchased an item.

The main difference here is that it requires implementing an additional bit of code.

After creating the event-based audience, you will need to add the event code below the </head> tag in case you wish to track the event on page load. Otherwise, if you wish to track the event for an inline action, attach the event code to the relevant HTML element. Please make sure your Pixel is installed on the page. Otherwise, your event will not be recorded.

Custom Audiences

You can create custom audiences in two ways:

  • Upload first-party CRM data or zip files directly to Realize to target, reach and re-engage with your existing customers.

  • Create a high-intent audience of users searching for specific keywords or receiving emails from specific domains. If you take this route, it is recommended that you wait 24 to 48 hours for the full reach to occur, so if you are setting up a campaign live, it may not scale straight away.

Predictive Audiences

Predictive Audiences are created from a pixel or s2s conversion seed. These groups of people are identified by an AI algorithm as likely to take the same action as the one identified. Using predictive audiences groupings helps you reach an incremental audience whilst driving strong CVR performance.

You can also find CRM lookalike audiences here that can be created from any CRM files you have uploaded to Realize.

Predictive Audiences
  • Status

    • No Activity Yet: Indicates there is no activity yet for this audience.

    • Active: There has been activity from your website within the last 7 days.

    • No Recent Activity: The audience was active in the past, but there has been no activity in the last 7 days.

    • Processing: The audience is being built and matched against Taboola users.

    • No Scale: The audience does not have enough scale to be targeted.

    • Disabled: The audience was disabled, and activities from the website are not being counted.

    • Archived: The audience was disabled and archived.

  • Condition: The URL conditions or Event Name that defines and builds the audience.

  • Campaign Using: The number of campaigns that are currently targeting this audience.

  • Monthly Reach: The number of users in your audience who had visible activity on Realize in the last 30 days.
