Campaign Group

Campaign Group is a new hierarchy in Realize to allow better budget allocation, campaign optimization, algorithm learning and improved reporting

Updated this week

What are Campaign Groups?

Campaign Group is a new layer between your account and campaigns to provide a structured hierarchy for campaigns, simplify campaign management, allow better budget allocation, improve algorithmic learning & reporting and align with industry standards.

Using this new hierarchy will provide better outcomes and can be easily used as:

  • Campaign Group - will represent the ‘What’ (what do you want to achieve, what is your objective and target KPI/success metric)

  • Campaign - will represent the ‘How’ (different optimization tactics like audience targeting, platforms, creative formats, supply type etc.)

It is advised that all campaigns within a Campaign Group should be optimizing towards the same marketing objective and KPI.

Do not mix two or more campaigns with different objectives under the same Campaign Group

This is what your new Realize structure will look like:

Why use Campaign Groups?

  • Automate budget management

    • Set one umbrella budget at the Campaign Group level and use Budget Allocator to allocate spend efficiently - ensuring complete budget utilization and improved performance

    • Reduce manual effort by spending less time adjusting budgets and more time optimizing strategy

  • Simplify campaign management

    • Use a clear, structured hierarchy to organize campaigns by objective

    • Experiment with different campaign tactics such as creative formats, targeting strategies, supply type etc.

  • Improve algorithm learning

    • Aggregate signals at the Campaign Group level to give the algorithm more data to learn from

    • Enable faster, more effective optimization across all campaigns in the group

  • Get better reporting and insights

    • View combined performance for all campaigns under a Campaign Group

    • Quickly identify which strategy works best for your product or objective

    • Make faster, more confident optimization decisions based on clearer insights

How to use Campaign Groups?

  • Once enabled to your account you will see Campaign Group as an added layer in the account hierarchy

    Realize dashboard

  • Click on the ‘+New’ to open the drop down filter and select Campaign group

    Realize dashboard

  • The Campaign Group creation form is quick and easy to fill with the following data requirements:

    campaign group creation form

    • Give your Campaign Group a name

    • Select the overall marketing objective for the Campaign Group. Remember that all the campaigns under this group should be optimized towards this common objective

    • Select the success metric / target KPI for this objective. This metric will measure the success of your Campaign Group and will be used as an input to the algorithm to optimize performance

    • Select the conversion event that you want to optimize for -

      • You can either select the default account level conversions

      • Or you can manually pick and select the conversion event that you want to be considered in the Campaign Group’s performance

    • [Optional] Enter the range of the success metric. The data entered here will not impact the performance of the Campaign Group but you can view this data in your reporting section for a better data driven analysis of campaign performance and will also help improve product recommendations

  • In the budget section, you have two options -

    • You can either select the budget allocator which will automatically allocate the campaign group budget to campaigns under this group

    • Or, you can manually assign budget to each individual campaign under this campaign group

      budget allocator

    • Under the advanced option, you can add a spending limit for the campaign group. This limit will act as a threshold and the campaign group will not breach this limit by pausing all the campaigns once this limit is reached

    • Once you’re satisfied with your settings, click ‘Create & Add Campaigns’ to create your first Campaign Group

  • Now you can start creating campaigns and use the drop down to assign the campaign to any existing Campaign Group

FAQs:

How should I structure my campaigns after the launch of campaign groups?

We’ve highlighted a few examples that show how advertisers are using Campaign Group in practice. These are meant to inspire—not restrict—how you use Campaign Groups. There are no fixed rules; you can structure Campaign Groups in the way that best supports your marketing objectives and business needs.

  • See the illustrative use cases here

When should I create a new campaign group? What’s the benefit?

For every different marketing objective and KPI/success metric, you should create a separate campaign group. Your campaign group represents your overall objective (like awareness, purchase, app downloads etc.), and the campaigns under it are the means to achieve this objective. The campaign group structure will simplify campaign management, allow better budget distribution, improve algorithmic learning and align with industry standards.

Does a campaign group require more than one campaign? Is there a limit to how many campaigns can be within a campaign group?

Your campaign group can have one or many campaigns under it. There is no limit to the number of campaigns that can be created within a campaign group. The only guideline from us is to make sure that all campaigns under a campaign group share the common marketing objective set at the campaign group level.

Can I optimize at a campaign group level or do I still have to optimize each individual campaign?

At the campaign group level, you are only setting the marketing objective, KPI to track this objective, conversion events and an overall budget. You have the ability to optimize each individual campaign under the campaign group based on your preferred strategies.

Can I have campaigns with different bidding strategies within a campaign group?

Yes, you can have campaigns with different bidding strategies under a campaign group. Each type of bidding strategy represents a different tactic to reach the objective set at the campaign group level.

Note: We recommend setting all campaigns to the same Bidding Strategy when using Budget Allocator.

Should Display be a separate campaign group?

If your display campaigns have a separate marketing objective and KPI, then yes, it should be a separate campaign group. However, if your display campaigns are an optimization tactic / strategy to achieve the same objective as your other / native campaigns, then display can be a campaign under the same campaign.

Pro Tip:

At present, we recommend not to use budget allocator with your display and native campaigns under the same Campaign Group - as using it might limit the spend for your display campaigns resulting in sub-optimal performance.

How does the budget allocator work? What does the next version (V2) of budget allocator look like?

In the current version (V1), the budget allocator is focused on ensuring budget depletion, while allowing advertisers to efficiently manage their budgets and reducing the need for manual budget adjustments of individual campaigns.

  • Budget Allocator allocates budget to active campaigns based on their reach and scale. This can mean that your top performing campaigns may not be top spending ones

  • For example, a narrow targeting campaign with great performance may be limited in scale, so the algorithm will prioritize budget to broader targeted campaigns in order to ensure budget utilization

The fully optimized version of budget allocator will focus on both performance and scale and will allocate spend automatically to your top performing campaigns.

Pro Tip:

We recommend setting all campaigns to the same Bidding Strategy when using Budget Allocator. In addition, for best performance make sure the conversion goals are the same between all campaigns.

What are the benefits of using Budget Allocator?

  • Save time with reduced manual budget allocation. Set your budget at the campaign group level and budget allocator will do rest

  • Improved budget depletion

  • Better reporting with an aggregated view of performance of your campaign groups

How will the performance simulator work if we’re applying budget at the group level and using budget allocator?

Currently you will not be able to use performance simulator for your campaigns if you are setting a budget at the campaign group level and using budget allocator.

What will happen to my existing campaigns once Campaign Group is launched?

There will be no impact to your existing campaigns. They will not be associated with any campaign group. Only new campaigns need to be associated with a campaign group.

Can I move my older campaigns to a newly created Campaign Group?

No, at present you can not migrate/move any older campaigns to a newly created campaign group.

What is Success Metric and the value in the campaign group setup?

Each campaign group should have one main KPI / success metric that you want to track. This success metric can be - ROAS, CPA, CTR etc. All the campaigns under the campaign group should be optimized towards achieving this success metric. The value is a range (lower and upper limit) for this success metric.

The success metric will be used in our algorithms to optimize campaign group performance. The values of this success metric are optional to provide and will not influence performance. However, these values will be used for future product development around performance recommendations, reporting etc.

Currently, in reporting - you will be able to see the actual campaign group performance versus your benchmark range in the ads reports. The benchmark values that you add will be shown as a dotted line on your charts.

I use an API integration to create campaigns, how will campaign group work for API feed?

Your existing API integrations will continue to work without disruption. If a campaign is created via API and no campaign group is specified, the system will automatically create a new campaign group for it. This ensures backward compatibility and a seamless transition. The auto-created campaign group will:

  1. Copy the campaign’s marketing objective and dates

  2. Be named “AutoGen - [Campaign Name]”

  3. The campaign group will utilize a manual budget setting

  4. Conversion events will be automatically inherited from the account level

There is no change in the API contract, your integration will not require modifications. However, for better structure, we recommend specifying a campaign group in your API calls moving forward to fully leverage the new hierarchy, reporting capabilities, and performance optimization.
